U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Mike Waltz recounted a tense encounter with Cuban officials during an appearance on “The Sunday Briefing.” The confrontation escalated when a Cuban diplomat allegedly pushed a staff member and slapped a phone out of his hand, leading to the diplomat’s expulsion from the United States. Waltz credited Secretary of State Marco Rubio for the decision to send the diplomat back to Cuba.
At the United Nations headquarters on October 28, 2026, Ambassador Waltz addressed the incident. He described how the expelled diplomat attempted to intimidate U.N. staff by trying to cut off Waltz’s microphone. Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno RodrÃguez Parrilla then approached the podium in an effort to interrupt Waltz’s speech.
During his speech, Waltz accused the Cuban government of enriching its leaders while neglecting its citizens. He displayed photos of luxury items associated with Cuban leaders, including Fidel Castro’s private island and luxury jet, along with images of lavish vacations and yachts.
Waltz condemned Cuba’s use of the U.N. for propaganda, vowing not to tolerate it. He cited a 100-page report by Marco Rubio titled “Cuba: The Capital of 21st Century Communism,” which accuses the Cuban government of espionage and influence operations in the U.S.
According to Waltz, the Cuban regime has been spreading communism through various groups and politicians in America. He attributed some of the unrest in the U.S. to over six decades of enduring Havana’s influence.
Waltz concluded with a hopeful note about Cuba’s future, predicting freedom for the Cuban people under President Trump’s leadership.
