The Tampa Bay Buccaneers achieved a rare feat on Sunday by winning against the Atlanta Falcons without completing a single pass. This has only happened once before in the Super Bowl era. Despite the unusual circumstances, the Buccaneers claimed a 16-0 victory in the rain-soaked game.
Coaching staff, including head coach Todd Bowles, adjusted the game plan due to the conditions. Bowles stated, “The conditions told him that,” in reference to their decision to focus on the running game. The weather made passing nearly impossible, but the team’s focus on rushing saw them break a club record with 324 yards on the ground.
Quarterback Baker Mayfield attempted three passes without success. He noted, “If you’re not going to throw the ball, I got to get active somehow,” as he discussed his role as a lead blocker on some plays.
Historically, the only other team failing to complete a pass since the NFL’s Super Bowl era began was the Buffalo Bills on September 29, 1974. In that game, led by O.J. Simpson, the Bills’ quarterback attempted two passes but didn’t complete any.
During the Sunday game, Buccaneers’ players Bucky Irving and Kenneth Gainwell excelled. Irving rushed for 170 yards with a 6.3-yard average, while Gainwell gained 140 yards, averaging 5.6 yards per attempt.
Irving commented, “I’m not going to lie to you. I don’t know the last time I checked the weather for a football game,” stressing that the team plays regardless of conditions.
In contrast, the Falcons’ quarterback Michael Penix Jr. had a tough game, completing only eight of 24 passes and throwing four interceptions.
The Buccaneers’ strategy focused on their strengths, leading to a dominant performance in the running game, ensuring victory without the need for a successful pass.
