Major League Baseball celebrated the sport’s finest defenders, and the Chicago Cubs stood out in this year’s awards. Center fielder Pete Crow-Armstrong and third baseman Alex Bregman were honored with the National League Gold Glove Awards for their exceptional performances at their respective positions.
Though the Cubs had three other finalists, including left fielder Ian Happ, right fielder Seiya Suzuki, and shortstop Dansby Swanson, they did not secure the top prize. Ian Happ’s streak of Gold Glove wins ended, as Milwaukee Brewers’ Jackson Chourio was recognized instead. Meanwhile, Arizona Diamondbacks’ Corbin Carroll and Geraldo Perdomo earned the honors over Suzuki, a first-time finalist, and Swanson.
Crow-Armstrong’s accomplishments extend beyond the Gold Glove. Recently named Player of the Year and NL Outstanding Player by fellow players, he is a strong contender for the NL MVP title expected to be announced soon. The 24-year-old showcased remarkable skills by leading MLB outfielders with 26 Outs Above Average (OAA) and a fielding run value (FRV) of 26. His range allowed him to convert 50% of five-star catch opportunities, making him a top candidate for the Platinum Glove Award, with results to be fan-determined and announced Friday.
Bregman’s journey to his second Gold Glove was marked by a notable comeback after a challenging season start. Previously winning in 2024 with the Houston Astros, he achieved a second-place tie among NL third basemen with a 7 FRV and led the majors with 15 defensive runs saved. He was one of only two third basemen to reach double-digit DRS and recorded the most assists in his league position. Notably, Bregman is the first Cubs third baseman to earn the honor since Ron Santo in 1968.
Elsewhere in the league, Chicago White Sox’s Chase Meidroth was a finalist for the American League second base position. Despite not winning, Meidroth led AL second basemen with a fielding run value of 10 and ranked third in fielding percentage (.986) and outs above average (9) over his 150-game appearance at second base.
