On November 1, a Learjet 60 aircraft crashed in Palm Beach County, Florida, leading to the deaths of nine people. The tragic event occurred about 9 miles from Mar-a-Lago, the estate of President Donald Trump. The cockpit recording captured the chilling declaration, “We’re out of time,” before the plane crashed.
Nathalia Gadelha Filgueiras, 20, was identified as the co-pilot by her family. She had deep connections to Palm Beach County, having started flying at 17 years old. The flight had originated from Austin, Texas, and was headed towards the Bahamas.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) announced that it would collaborate with the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) for a comprehensive investigation. According to recorded data, the jet plummeted hundreds of feet per second before its fiery crash. Just before the mayday call at 12:47 p.m., the crew reported experiencing “moderate turbulence” and mentioned managing icy conditions. Thirty-five seconds later, the last communication came from the cockpit.
“We’re out of time.”
Filgueiras’ mother and stepfather confirmed her identity to both the New York Post and WPEC in West Palm Beach. Earlier speculation mistakenly identified another pilot, Emily Shelton, as being on the aircraft, which she later denied.
Gadelha Filgueiras’ journey as a pilot began when she acquired her license in 2023, even before obtaining a driver’s license. She expressed pride in her ability to fly, often responding humorously when asked if she could drive. Her father, who began flying in 2018, also supported her lessons, which began in 2020.
She completed her training at American Flyers, a flying school with locations in Texas and Florida. Her family’s social media posts often showed their shared passion for flying.
Videos capturing the horrific crash circulated online, remarkably showing the aircraft nosediving and exploding upon impact. Governor Ron DeSantis described the footage as “jarring.” Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy commented on the event, urging people to pray for the families and loved ones affected.
Authorities from Palm Beach County, the Palm Beach medical examiners, and the National Transportation Safety Board have been approached for comments. The investigation continues, with further updates anticipated as details unfold.
