Rep. Lisa McClain, R-Mich., chair of the House Republican Conference, highlighted recent achievements on Capitol Hill alongside Speaker of the House Mike Johnson, R-La. Their efforts aimed to reevaluate what is considered progress in Washington.
Traditionally, a new program, regulation, or office was seen as positive progress. However, House Republicans of the 119th Congress sought to reverse this trend, focusing on returning freedom to Americans by reducing federal intervention.
For many years, the accumulation of authority in Washington occurred incrementally. Congress would delegate authority to agencies, these agencies would formulate rules, and gradually, freedoms would diminish silently. McClain emphasized that reversing this was crucial for the current Congress.
This Congress passed over 900 legislative pieces, ranking as the second most in U.S. history. Yet, McClain argued that overturning 23 federal rules through the Congressional Review Act was an even greater achievement, setting a record for repeals by any Congress.
The 119th Congress acted decisively by making tax reductions from 2017 permanent, thus preventing additional financial burdens on Americans. Tax adjustments have facilitated over $82 billion in individual tax relief, with projections estimating a $4.6 trillion return to families and businesses over time, alongside a projected $1.1 trillion cut in federal spending.
Strengthening security was another priority. House Republicans ensured that no illegal immigrants were released into the country over 16 months, counteracting policy changes by Democrats.
In practice, the philosophy of limited government manifested across the economy. They removed regulatory barriers, promoted tax certainty, and expanded American energy options. These changes were aimed at increasing Americans’ freedom to act and decide for themselves.
The foundation laid by the 119th Congress emphasizes crucial elements: tax stability, regulatory clarity, and border security. These changes are not ends but tools enabling growth, opportunity, and prosperity.
McClain concluded by underscoring the importance of allowing Americans to build their futures, emphasizing that while government can facilitate, it does not dictate personal success.
