Democrats Prepare to Probe Trump’s DC Projects

As Democrats anticipate regaining control of one or both chambers of Congress, they are gearing up to utilize their investigative powers on several of President Trump’s projects in Washington, D.C. These projects have raised concerns among Democrats, including modifications to the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, plans near Arlington National Cemetery, and efforts to construct a ballroom at the White House.

While Democrats have tried to scrutinize these activities during Trump’s presidency, gaining control of Congress would allow them to demand documents and subpoena witnesses, enabling a more thorough investigation.

Contracts Under Scrutiny

Rep. Jared Huffman (Calif.), the leading Democrat on the House Natural Resources Committee, emphasized the need to address what he perceives as a lack of oversight. The Trump administration initiated several significant projects ahead of the nation’s 250th anniversary, which included renovations to the Reflecting Pool and a White House ballroom.

Critics have pointed out the usage of no-bid contracts in these projects, which conflict with standard practice by not allowing competitive bidding. Reports from The New York Times suggest these contracts may have included inflated profit margins. Huffman remarked, “A lot of this is no-bid contracts that just have the stench of corruption and self-dealing and incompetence.” The intention to shed light on these activities could bring transparency and accountability.

“We’re going to be making up for two years of zero oversight by this feckless MAGA Congress,” said Huffman.
