Democrat Josh Turek Wins Iowa Senate Seat

The Fox News Decision Desk has announced that Democrat Josh Turek has won Iowa’s open U.S. Senate seat, flipping a seat held by Republicans as they struggle to maintain control of the chamber. Turek defeated Republican Representative Ashley Hinson in the bid to replace retiring Senator Joni Ernst.

In a message on social media platform X, Turek declared, “Iowa, after 448 days of hard work, pushing up hills, knocking doors, visiting all 99 counties, and preaching a message of a better future for Iowa – together, we have made history.” This victory marks the first time Democrats have secured this seat since 2008, when former Senator Tom Harkin won his final term. It also signifies a Democratic gain in a state that former President Donald Trump won by over 13 points in 2024.

Senate Control Uncertain

Senate Majority Leader John Thune prioritized Hinson’s campaign. He stated, “I’m absolutely convinced that she flat has to win, and if she doesn’t, we’re not going to be in the majority.” Despite conceding her campaign, Hinson congratulated Turek on a “very hard fought campaign.” She expressed hopes to work together, saying, “Josh and I, to put it mildly, disagree on a lot. But tonight I hope that we can agree on this, that the campaign is behind us, and the work of serving the people of Iowa remains ahead.” Hinson emphasized the need to focus on significant issues beyond politics, like supporting veterans, young people, and students.

Turek’s Campaign Focus

Turek’s campaign centered on affordability, healthcare, and wages. He pledged to advocate for lower prescription drug costs, more affordable housing, a higher minimum wage, and a federal ban on food price gouging. Health care featured prominently in his campaign. Born with spina bifida, Turek is a two-time Paralympic gold medalist. He cited his own challenges accessing healthcare, stating that “health care is a human right.” His platform included restoring Medicaid funding, protecting Affordable Care Act subsidies, and supporting rural hospitals.

Turek aimed to be a bipartisan lawmaker capable of collaborating across party lines, particularly on immigration. He adopted the stance of a “prairie populist,” highlighting how working families face economic pressure from housing, grocery, and fuel costs, while politicians and corporations profit. He linked Iowa’s economic issues to Trump’s tariffs and the Iran conflict.

Hinson’s Campaign Priorities

Hinson focused on tax relief, border security, parental involvement in education, and backing agriculture and biofuels. Trump endorsed her in Sioux City, emphasizing her qualities as “a mother, a warrior, a patriot” and promising permanent E15 with her in the Senate.
