Natalie DeMatteo, a senior defensive specialist for Mother McAuley, may not dominate the stat sheet, but her on-court presence commands attention. During a critical play Tuesday night, St. Laurence seemed ready to clinch a point until DeMatteo performed a horizontal dive, extending her arms to save the ball. Moments later, Jayce Prohaska sealed the point with a decisive kill.
Preparation and Performance
DeMatteo emphasized the importance of honing her skills: “In practice, we focus on lateral dives. These plays are exciting because they allow us to stretch our capabilities.” Her efforts significantly contributed to the Mighty Macs’ triumph over St. Laurence in a Class 4A Argo Sectional semifinal. Jayce Prohaska excelled with nine kills and five digs, Keira McQuillan added seven kills, and Ava Calle recorded eight digs. Peyton Heatherly provided 18 assists.
On the opposing side, Aubrey Martinez led St. Laurence with eight kills, supported by Abby Ambrose and Stella McDermott. Mother McAuley is set to face Marist for the sectional title after Marist’s victory over Lyons.
Leadership and Team Dynamics
Coach Jen DeJarld praised DeMatteo’s leadership, stating, “Natalie has been one of our best captains. She organizes her team effectively and earns everyone’s respect.” As a three-year starter, DeMatteo started as a libero and now shares the backcourt with Ava Calle, emphasizing teamwork over individual achievements.
“Ava and I support each other,” DeMatteo remarked. “We both focus on initiating plays to enhance team performance.”
DeMatteo’s dedication extends beyond technique. “Natalie focuses intensely, even in simple drills,” Calle noted. “Her precision inspires us all.”
The Journey and Legacy
DeMatteo, who hails from Oak Lawn, has been a Mother McAuley supporter long before joining the team. Her admiration for past players, such as libero Gigi Navarrete, shaped her dedication to the sport.
Anticipating her college decision post-season, DeMatteo cherishes every moment with the Mighty Macs. “The camaraderie and commitment here are unparalleled,” she remarked.
