House Speaker Mike Johnson to Step Back from Leadership

WASHINGTON ― House Speaker Mike Johnson will step away from Republican leadership next year as Democrats prepare to take control of Congress. A reliable source confirmed that Johnson will not vie for the minority leader position in 2024, paving the way for new leadership on Capitol Hill.

One contender for the role is House Judiciary Chair Jim Jordan from Ohio. In a letter to colleagues, Jordan announced his candidacy, promising a proactive approach to the job. “In these next two years, our job cannot be merely to spotlight how radical this new Democrat party is. Offense, not defense, wins elections,” Jordan wrote, emphasizing the importance of restoring voter faith in Republican policies.

Jordan, known for his founding role in the conservative House Freedom Caucus, previously ran for the speaker position in 2023 but was blocked by moderate party members. His campaign focuses on safety, economic prosperity, and preserving American values.

Johnson’s choice to step back reflects a broader acknowledgment of the significant losses Republicans suffered in the midterm elections on Tuesday. By Wednesday, Democrats had claimed at least 228 seats, with many more likely to follow.

In a statement, Johnson remarked, “We knew that to keep the House and sustain a majority, we would have to defy more than a century of midterm history. It’s only happened twice in 90 years that a sitting president has gained or retained seats in the first two-year cycle.”

Under Johnson’s term, House Republicans maintained strong allegiance to former President Donald Trump. The public viewed them as aligned with a president who failed to meet key promises such as lowering consumer prices.

Leadership elections typically occur when a new Congress convenes every other January. Then, the full House selects a speaker based on a majority vote.

An open letter from Rep. Greg Steube highlights additional challenges Johnson faced in maintaining his leadership role. Steube criticized what he perceived as weak conservative governance, urging Johnson to allow space for new leadership.
