Geri Jewell and Lisa Whelchel portrayed cousins on the popular TV show The Facts of Life. Their characters appeared together throughout the NBC comedy’s nine-season run from 1979 to 1988. Jewell played the role of Geri, Blair Warner’s cousin, making her a groundbreaking figure as the first disabled actress with a recurring role in primetime television.
Recently, Lisa Whelchel, who played Blair Warner, met with her long-time friend Geri Jewell. Whelchel expressed the significance of their friendship in a heartfelt post. “So great to hang with my dear friend Geri Jewell. We have known each other almost 50 years! She was my first roommate,” she wrote. Whelchel shared a photo of them together, noting the T-shirt Jewell wore, which stated, “I still believe in Norman Lear’s America.”
In a 2025 interview with The New York Post, Jewell described her connection with Whelchel as “very close.” She reflected on the impact of her role, emphasizing that it heightened awareness and sensitivity about disabilities at a time when such representation was rare. “I meet people all the time, and they say, ‘I saw you on Facts of Life, and you really changed my life,'” Jewell said.
Jewell’s career began in stand-up comedy, and her encounter with TV icon Norman Lear opened many doors for her. She recalled Lear approaching her after a performance, saying, “You’re really funny, kid, but you’re way before your time.” This meeting eventually led to her role on The Facts of Life, which Jewell recounts warmly as a pivotal moment.
In 2014, during the show’s 35th anniversary celebration with The Hollywood Reporter, Jewell reminisced about her character on The Facts of Life. “It was the most amazing thing to have happened to me,” she said, acknowledging the industry’s progress in representing people with disabilities. “They let me be me; they let me be Blair’s cousin,” she added, highlighting her role as a stepping stone toward greater inclusion.
