A former New Jersey elementary school aide, Shaun M. Stebbins, has been charged with 61 criminal offenses. These include aggravated sexual assault and creating child sexual abuse material. Prosecutors found multiple images and videos of students on his devices.
Stebbins, 44, worked at Woodbine Elementary School in Cape May County from February 2022 until his arrest on March 29. The arrest occurred in Atlantic County. The investigation began after authorities in Atlantic County and Somers Point identified potential crimes linked to Stebbins in an ongoing sexual assault case at his home.
School Discovery
According to prosecutors, investigators searched Stebbins’ devices and found numerous images and videos involving students from Woodbine Elementary School. The authorities have not disclosed the number of students involved or when the material was recorded. Reports indicate Stebbins filmed and performed acts during school hours, including in a school bathroom and during nap times.
On October 30, Cape May County prosecutors listed the charges against Stebbins:
- 29 counts of manufacturing child pornography
- 5 counts of aggravated sexual assault
- 13 counts of sexual assault by sexual contact
- 14 counts of endangering the welfare of a child
The charges of manufacturing and aggravated sexual assault are first-degree crimes. These carry potential sentences of 10 to 20 years in prison under New Jersey law. The remaining charges are second-degree offenses, which may lead to 5 to 10 years of imprisonment.
Prosecutor’s Statement
Cape May County Prosecutor Jeffrey H. Sutherland stated the investigation is still ongoing. He emphasized the need to protect children, who are a vulnerable group. He added, “Anyone who harms a child will be held accountable through our justice system.”
Stebbins remains in custody at the Atlantic County Correctional Facility as court proceedings continue. The Woodbine School District and related prosecutor offices did not respond to requests for comment.
