Two police officers who defended the U.S. Capitol during the January 6, 2021, riot have filed a federal lawsuit. They aim to stop the Trump administration’s approximately $1.8 billion fund. This fund is intended to compensate individuals who claim they have been targeted by a so-called “weaponized” legal system.
The officers, Harry Dunn and Daniel Hodges, argue that the fund breaches federal law. They assert that it could also legitimize acts of political violence. This legal action marks the first known challenge against this fund.
In 2021, officers Dunn, Hodges, Michael Fanone, and Aquilino Gonell testified before a House panel about their experiences during the riot. Their testimonies highlighted the severity of the attack on the Capitol, underlining the dangers they faced while performing their duties.
Through this lawsuit, Dunn and Hodges seek to prevent what they perceive as a misuse of government resources. They aim to uphold the integrity of the legal system and prevent any actions that might encourage or legitimize future acts of violence.
