The New York Mets emerged victorious in a thrilling Subway Series against the New York Yankees on Sunday afternoon. The game, held in New York, saw the rookie Carson Benge at the plate during the bottom of the 10th inning with Mets runners on first and third.
Benge played a crucial role, hitting a chopper over Yankees reliever Tim Hill’s head that led to a dramatic finish. Yankees players Anthony Volpe and Max Schuemann collided while attempting to field the ball, allowing Marcus Semien to score the game-winning run, sealing a 7-6 win for the Mets.
“Once it went over the pitcher’s head I kind of knew,” shared Benge post-match.
The Yankees had initially led the match 6-3 until the bottom of the ninth inning. Mets player Tyrone Taylor stepped up with Benge and Juan Soto on base. With two outs, Taylor managed to tie the game with a powerful hit to left field against Yankees pitcher David Bednar. The tension carried into the next inning, leading to the decisive play.
“I didn’t know it was going to stay fair,” Taylor admitted. “I kind of waited there to see if it would.”
This marked Taylor’s third home run of the season, contributing significantly to the Mets’ comeback.
Meanwhile, the Yankees concluded their nine-game road trip with a 2-7 record. They now prepare for a seven-game homestand facing American League East rivals, including the Toronto Blue Jays and the Tampa Bay Rays.
“Guys are playing tough and making the plays they need to but just coming up a little bit short,” commented Yankees’ Aaron Judge. “We’ve got to have a short memory, move on and get ready … because we’ve got a big division opponent coming in.”
David Bednar’s blown save was notable, marking his second in 12 chances and raising his ERA to 4.95.
“Overall, it’s unacceptable, especially in that spot,” Bednar expressed. “It’s just very frustrating.”
Mets manager Carlos Mendoza praised his team’s determination throughout the game.
“We get down. We get punched in the face. We get back up,” Mendoza said. “Today was a perfect example when, like I said, we didn’t play our best game and we still are able to shake hands at the end.”
