Senator John Kennedy from Louisiana attributes a significant influence to President Donald Trump in Republican politics. Kennedy pointed out this impact during a Sunday appearance on “The Sunday Briefing.” Trump’s endorsement played a crucial role in the recent Louisiana Senate race, contributing to the unseating of incumbent Senator Bill Cassidy.
“The outcome was expected unless one is completely unaware,” Kennedy stated. He mentioned that polls indicated for over a year that Cassidy was facing challenges. Trump’s backing of Congresswoman Julia Letlow added momentum, Kennedy elaborated. Despite the challenges, Cassidy entered the race, which Kennedy noted with respect.
According to The Associated Press, Letlow and Louisiana Treasurer John Fleming surpassed Cassidy in the GOP primary. Letlow received around 45% of the vote, with Fleming following at approximately 28%, leaving Cassidy in third place with just under 25%. Letlow will proceed to a runoff against Fleming, since neither secured more than 50% of votes. The winner will face the Democratic runoff winner in November.
Cassidy, who voted to convict Trump during the impeachment trial, was criticized by Trump on Saturday morning. Trump described Cassidy as “disloyal” and detrimental to Louisiana.
After his loss, Trump expressed satisfaction on social media, stating Cassidy’s political career was finished. In Cassidy’s concession speech, he subtly criticized Trump, emphasizing the importance of accepting election results without unfounded excuses. He thanked the voters for allowing him to serve.
Although Trump’s endorsement of Letlow is considered a significant factor in her performance, Kennedy also noted other reasons behind voter choices. He mentioned voter frustration due to a shift from open to closed primaries, which caused confusion during the election. This change limited voter options and affected participation.
Kennedy concluded that Trump’s endorsement was critical, but Cassidy’s political difficulties were not a surprise, especially after Trump’s involvement.
