Virginia’s Felony Disenfranchisement and Its Impact on Voting Rights

For 150 years, Virginia violated a federal law that prohibits broad disenfranchisement of individuals with felony convictions, a federal judge has ruled.

Son Huynh, who plans to vote in November, discussed his challenges following a felony conviction with a reporter. He requested anonymity in photographs as he works to rebuild his life post-incarceration.

Before his conviction, Huynh never missed an election. Raised in California, Huynh learned about the importance of voting in school. His parents, who emigrated from Vietnam, instilled in him a sense of pride in participating in elections. Moving to Virginia around age 13, voting remained an important aspect of his identity.
