Authorities have opened new emergency shelters in response to the mass evacuations caused by the hazardous materials incident in Garden Grove. The Orange County Fire Authority announced late Friday night that Kennedy High in La Palma is now a shelter for displaced residents, joining Ocean View High in Huntington Beach, Savanna High in Anaheim, and Freedom Hall at Mile Square Park in Fountain Valley.
By Saturday morning, numerous evacuees had gathered at Kennedy High’s gymnasium, managed by the American Red Cross. Support groups, including police, school staff, and local workers, offered assistance. The situation stems from a chemical leak at GKN Aerospace. Residents, like Denise Guerrero, are frustrated by the lack of direct information from authorities. Online updates are the primary source of news for many evacuees.
Firefighters have stabilized the temperature of a compromised chemical tank at around 90 degrees Celsius. However, potential disasters remain, such as an explosion or chemical spill. The incident was originally triggered by a failed internal cooling system that caused a heat reaction, making it difficult to drain the tank’s toxic content.
With evacuation centers filling up, families from affected areas, like Cypress and Buena Park, seek temporary refuge. Those near the evacuation zone have mixed concerns, with some wondering if leaving was necessary. Despite adjustments by local authorities, the situation remains fluid, and many families are in a state of uncertainty.
Governor Gavin Newsom has declared a state of emergency as efforts to manage the crisis continue. Initial evacuation orders were given on Thursday, with more being added by Friday as the threat escalated rapidly. The chemical in question, methyl methacrylate, poses significant risks if inhaled.
Efforts are ongoing to stabilize the situation, with multiple agencies coordinating to ensure public safety. Shelters at Kennedy High and other locations are working to accommodate evacuees, but many worry about their long-term living arrangements, especially with pets in tow.
