Controversy Surrounds Jaxson Dart’s Support for Trump

New York Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart faced severe backlash for introducing President Donald Trump at a rally in Suffern, N.Y., on May 22, 2026. Many liberal sports fans and media members reacted strongly against Dart’s action, with his teammate Abdul Carter expressing disapproval, stating, “Thought this was AI, what are we doing man?”

The comparison between Dart and former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick drew criticism. Kaepernick is known for kneeling during the national anthem to protest racial injustice, a move that ended his NFL career amid controversy. Yet, equating his activism to Dart’s political endorsement was seen as inappropriate by some commentators.

One player was criticized for kneeling during the anthem and becoming highly political, wearing clothing disrespectful of law enforcement. The other, Dart, simply introduced a sitting president. These actions led to discussions that the two scenarios are not equivalent, like comparing different categories of entities entirely.

Another claim suggested Kaepernick was forced out of the league unjustly for his activism. However, evidence points to performance struggles, injuries, and divisive actions as factors impacting his career. He was benched due to poor performance, not because of external conspiracy.

Athletes can speak for their political preferences; it’s their right as free citizens. Yet, such actions off-field differ significantly from making political statements during games, which can divide teams and fans.

The backlash against Dart’s speech showcases the intolerance often shown by critics, who overlook similar political expressions by athletes like LeBron James or Stephen Curry. While Dart’s choice sparked debate, the rationale remains that athletes should be free to express political opinions, especially outside their sport, without being harshly judged.

Sports should unite, not divide us, regardless of political affiliation. Engaging in political expression should ideally occur outside professional settings to minimize conflicts.

Calling out Dart for his decision aligns with free speech rights. However, the contrasting situations between him and Kaepernick highlight differing stances on political involvement by athletes. Dart’s simple introduction of President Trump was indicative of his political support, not activism during NFL games.
