Michael Franzese, a former captain of the Colombo crime family, shared a startling story allegedly told by his late father, John “Sonny” Franzese. The tale involves Marilyn Monroe, Robert F. Kennedy, and how a mobster became a federal target. In an appearance on the “Hang Out with Sean Hannity” podcast, Franzese recounted how an encounter between Monroe and Kennedy might have led to FBI scrutiny on his father.
According to Franzese, Monroe mentioned his father’s name during an intimate moment with Kennedy, prompting the Attorney General to ask FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover to investigate Sonny Franzese. The elder Franzese claimed to have had an affair with Monroe after meeting her at the Stork Club in Manhattan. During their time together, Monroe allegedly shouted Sonny’s name, causing Kennedy to react.
“Now this is my father telling me this,” Franzese explained. “She’s with Bobby Kennedy, and he said, ‘One night they were having fun together, and she screamed out my name.'”
The alleged incident, if true, explains why federal agents frequently monitored Franzese’s activities. Michael Franzese, who left organized crime, discussed his father’s claims posthumously, believing the targeting made sense given Hoover’s denial of the Mafia’s existence.
In another section of the podcast, Franzese talked about his lucrative gas tax scheme. He claimed the operation brought in millions weekly, with the mob collecting taxes but not paying the government. Franzese himself reportedly earned $3 million to $4 million each week.
John “Sonny” Franzese was photographed in 1966 during a police custody event in New York City. Later, he was arrested in 1967 and convicted for orchestrating bank robberies. He received a 50-year prison sentence, later getting paroled. In 2011, he faced prison again on racketeering conspiracy charges. He passed away in 2020 at the age of 103.
