Red Cross Volunteers Die from Ebola in DR Congo Amid Outbreak

The Red Cross announced the death of three volunteers in the Democratic Republic of Congo due to Ebola. These volunteers were involved in humanitarian efforts in the Ituri province, amidst an outbreak declared a public health emergency by the World Health Organization (WHO).

The deceased, Alikana Udumusi Augustin, Sezabo Katanabo, and Ajiko Chandiru Viviane, contracted Ebola while performing dead body management on March 27, unaware of the outbreak’s existence at the time. They are the first known victims linked to this situation.

A patient underwent testing at Mongbwalu General Referral Hospital during the response on May 20, 2026. The volunteers died between May 5 and May 16, the IFRC stated. Their dedication exemplifies the courage displayed by Red Cross volunteers globally, who work in challenging environments to aid vulnerable communities.

The IFRC, supporting efforts against Ebola, noted its commitment to helping affected regions. The organization operates with over 17 million volunteers worldwide. The Africa CDC increased high-risk country listings, including several African nations.

In Uganda, three new Ebola cases raised the confirmed count to five, including a driver, health worker, and a woman from Congo. The WHO reported 82 confirmed cases and seven deaths in Congo, with nearly 750 suspected cases and 177 potential fatalities.

Dr. Craig Spencer, an emergency room physician, stressed concerns for healthcare workers due to their exposure during patient care. Ebola spreads through direct contact with bodily fluids, leading to severe bleeding and organ failure. The strain, Bundibugyo virus, lacks vaccines or treatments.

The WHO elevated Congo’s risk assessment to very high, maintaining regional and global risk at high and low, respectively.
