Time magazine faces backlash for its cover story on Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Graham Platner. The June 8 issue showcases Platner, competing in Maine’s Senate primary, with the headline, “Party Crasher: The rise of scandal-plagued Democrat Graham Platner.”
Time’s post on X states, “TIME’s new cover: Even in this antiestablishment political moment, Graham Platner’s rise has been remarkable. His candidacy is forcing the party to come to terms with what it’s willing to risk in exchange for a fighter.”
Platner encounters several controversies, including having a tattoo linked to Nazi symbolism. Deleted posts from a former Reddit account attributed to Platner show him making offensive sexual remarks, identifying as a “communist” and “socialist,” and mocking a Purple Heart soldier injured in combat.
Senator Elizabeth Warren was questioned about her previous supportive remark, calling Platner “her kind of man” during a news conference in Lewiston, Maine.
Time’s article portrays Platner as a rough-edged outsider favored by Democratic voters to become their next “national star.” His controversial background includes a Nazi tattoo, a DUI after leaving the military, and hostile language in Reddit posts.
The magazine cover draws criticism from conservatives on X. Elizabeth Pipko, former Trump campaign spokesperson, criticized the media’s portrayal. Conservative commentator Stephen L. Miller referenced Time’s 1938 “Man of the Year” choice, Adolf Hitler. Additional criticism came from various users on X.
During an interview in Portland, Maine, Platner addressed a tattoo initially recognized as a Nazi symbol.
Time and Platner have not responded to Fox News Digital’s request for comment. Platner became the Democrats’ expected nominee after his competitor, Gov. Janet Mills, ended her campaign. If he wins the primary, Platner will challenge Republican Sen. Susan Collins in a critical race affecting the U.S. Senate’s balance of power.
