A Senate Republican has voiced concern over the impact of President Donald Trump’s decisions on the GOP’s ability to maintain control of the Senate. The criticism adds to the ongoing tension between Senator Thom Tillis, R-N.C., and Trump. This strain began last year when Republicans attempted to pass a major bill favored by the president.
Recently, Trump labeled Tillis as a “nitpicker” on Truth Social, following Tillis’s decision to not seek reelection. Trump claimed, “When I told him that I would not endorse him for another run, too much work and drama (he couldn’t have won, anyway!), he immediately quit the race and publicly announced that he was going to ‘retire.'” He added that the media viewed Tillis as brave for opposing him, but he considered Tillis a quitter.
Trump’s criticism reflects his dissatisfaction with Tillis’s opposition to certain administration initiatives. Tillis has been outspoken about his disagreements since announcing he wouldn’t run again. He criticized Trump’s $1.8 billion “anti-weaponization” fund, calling out officials like Ed Martin and Howard Lutnick for various decisions, and accused Pete Hegseth of not holding Vladimir Putin accountable for crimes against Ukrainian civilians.
"If opposing these things makes me a RINO, then I gladly accept that nickname," Tillis stated on X. "We need Republicans to do well in November, but the stupid stuff is killing our chances!"
In response, White House spokeswoman Olivia Wales defended Trump as the GOP’s leader and motivator, stating that Trump’s leadership has strengthened the country with policies like secure borders and middle-class tax cuts.
However, Tillis and other Republicans have expressed frustration over Trump’s DOJ initiatives, particularly the “anti-weaponization” fund. This fund recently impeded congressional efforts to finance immigration operations. Tillis fears the fund might compensate January 6 rioters who pled guilty to assaults on police officers.
