Rescue Efforts Continue as Building Collapse Claims Lives in the Philippines

A tragic building collapse in Angeles City, located in the northern province of Pampanga, Philippines, has resulted in confirmed fatalities and many missing individuals. Early on Monday, rescue teams successfully pulled three people from the rubble. The disaster struck a nine-story hotel under construction, which crumbled into a heap of concrete slabs, twisted rebars, and aluminum scaffolding.

The collapse has claimed four lives, including two men who were found but did not survive. Emergency personnel struggled to revive one individual in an ambulance, but despite their efforts, it was in vain. This scene unfolded before a small group of journalists, including those from The Associated Press, as rescuers worked tirelessly to extract the trapped individuals.

Brigadier General Jess Mendez, the regional police chief, informed AP that desperate attempts were made to administer water and intravenous medication to one trapped man, all while battling the harsh summer heat. Tragically, despite the efforts made, one of the victims did not survive.

Among the three people extricated from the debris was an unidentified individual who was not listed among the 17 missing, primarily construction workers. The fourth fatality was a Malaysian tourist who became trapped when debris struck a budget inn. Another guest at the inn sustained injuries but managed to escape.

Angeles City Mayor Carmelo Lazatin stated that even after a powerful lightning storm led to the building’s collapse, the rescue mission remained focused on saving lives. ‘My greatest hope is to rescue more people alive,’ Lazatin told AP, expressing a desire to avoid bringing further distress to the families of the trapped workers.

Anxiety looms among the relatives of the missing workers, waiting near the debris. Lea Mendoza Casilao, a 47-year-old sardine factory worker, shared her despair over her boyfriend, a construction worker still trapped. She had brought enough food supplies for the week, hoping to see him over the weekend, a plan shattered by the early morning collapse.

Mayor Lazatin emphasized the cautious approach of the rescue teams due to unstable concrete slabs precariously supported by aluminum scaffolding. Meanwhile, 26 workers were either rescued or managed to escape the collapsing building, where they had been sleeping on plywood boards on the ground floor.

Police Chief General Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. assured support for an ongoing investigation into the incident. This probe will aim to determine the cause and any possible breaches of safety and building codes.

Angeles City, historically home to one of the largest U.S. Air Force bases outside mainland America, has evolved into an entertainment and commercial hub. The Clark Air Base, situated approximately 80 kilometers north of Manila, was closed in the early 1990s and has since transformed into the Clark Freeport Zone, an industrial and tourist area. Remnants of the base era, such as bars and budget accommodations, still linger in the region.
