Burt Jones, the leading Republican candidate for governor in Georgia, has proudly highlighted his efforts to contest Donald J. Trump’s election loss in 2020. He describes these actions as a mark of distinction during his campaign engagements.
While on the campaign trail, Jones remarked, “You’ve got to think back to who was standing up — who was in the ditch, in the foxhole — with everybody when we were fighting in 2020.” He made this statement to supporters at a suburban Atlanta gun store.
Recently, buoyed by an endorsement from President Trump, Jones secured the most votes in the initial round of Georgia’s Republican primary for governor. He is now set for a runoff on June 16 against Rick Jackson, a prominent pro-Trump billionaire.
The past election activities still linger as Jones faces the upcoming runoff. His involvement in the 2020 presidential election was significant, with few state officials playing as crucial a role in the effort to maintain Trump’s presidency.
A review by The New York Times of state and federal investigations, including numerous public documents and leaked discovery materials from the unsuccessful Georgia criminal case involving Trump and his associates, highlighted Jones’ participation. These records reveal that Jones, who was a state senator at the time, coordinated with the Trump campaign and maintained communication with Trump himself. During a rally in 2020, Trump expressed strong support, stating Jones was “in my pocket.”
