In the face of a sweep by the New York Knicks, Cleveland Cavaliers’ star James Harden struggled to accept defeat. The Knicks defeated the Cavaliers in Game 4 with a decisive 130-93 victory. Harden, who scored 12 points and missed all six of his three-point attempts, also committed five turnovers and had a minus-19 rating on the court.
When asked how much better the Knicks were than the Cavaliers, Harden was hesitant to acknowledge their superiority. “I can’t even answer that question, honestly. Yeah, it’s 4-0, but I don’t think we had a chance as far as our best shot from the standpoint of the circumstances,” Harden remarked. “Obviously, they dominated us 4-0, but I don’t know if I could, necessarily, answer that question, just because, genuinely, I do feel like we are the better team. But series wise, we didn’t show it.”
Despite Harden’s confidence, the Cavaliers provided little evidence to support his claim. They exceeded 100 points only twice in the series. In Game 1, they reached overtime after the Knicks erased a 20-point deficit to claim victory. Subsequent games were not close.
Cleveland showed absolutely zero proof of that statement.
Harden has a reputation as one of the league’s most prolific scorers, yet his quest for a championship continues without success. ESPN Insights reported Harden has played 191 playoff games without capturing a title, trailing only Karl Malone in this category.
Looking ahead, Harden holds a $42.3 million player option for the offseason but is unlikely to re-sign with the Cavaliers. Team owner Dan Gilbert commented on the season’s progress through social media, stating, “We took a step ahead this spring, but we are nowhere near where we need to be. I can’t thank the fans enough for the support this year. We will dig in all summer and do everything we possibly can to take the next step. We will grind until we get there.”
The Cavaliers face a challenging offseason, weighing the options of adding new talent for another championship pursuit or overhauling the roster to rebuild from scratch.
