Amy Grant shared a candid revelation about the advice she received following a severe bicycle accident that resulted in a traumatic brain injury. In 2022, the renowned singer was knocked unconscious after a fall from her bike, leading to hospitalization for a concussion, cuts, and abrasions. The event left her with lingering symptoms like memory issues, balance problems, and fatigue. During her recovery, she battled depression.
Now, Grant is back with her new album, ‘The Me That Remains,’ marking her first original music release in 13 years. She described the album as her most personal work. Speaking during an interview at the Covenant House California’s ‘Speak Out’ event, she shared how straightforward guidance from her doctor played a pivotal role in reigniting her songwriting.
“The doctor told me, ‘Lean in, don’t pull back, don’t shrink. Lean into the things that you’ve loved,'” Grant recounted. She added, “I’ve always loved writing. The first song I penned was ‘The Me That Remains.'”
Grant has found that aging brings a new perspective and freedom to her songwriting process. She feels she’s merely a witness to her life and others’ experiences, less worried about how her music is received. The album, she says, is about embracing one’s true self amidst life’s challenges.
Grant’s health challenges didn’t end with her brain injury. She also faced a thyroglossal duct cyst in her throat, discovered after a vocalist noticed changes in her neck. A rare condition, usually found in children, it required a five-hour surgery in January 2023. This forced Grant to relearn how to sing.
Another major health scare came in late 2019 when she discovered, during her husband’s cardiologist appointment, that she had a rare heart defect known as partial anomalous pulmonary venous return (PAPVR). It required life-saving open-heart surgery. Reflecting on the experience, Grant said, “There was nothing about my life that said, ‘You have a ticking time bomb.’ But I did.”
These experiences have shifted Grant’s perspective on life and fame. Her family remains her grounding force. Despite her success, familial connections kept her aware of what truly matters. She treasures each day as a gift and acknowledges the importance of community support during tough times.
Grant’s health journey has also deepened the appreciation she and her family have for their time together. She recounted a family gathering where they took a moment to recognize the gift of one another’s presence.
Recently, Grant headlined the ‘Speak Out’ event, benefiting Covenant House California, a nonprofit aiding homeless youth. She expressed her honor in performing and supporting the community, noting that every young voice at the event carries a powerful story of resilience and triumph over adversity.
