Jeff Bezos’ Consortium Acquires Minority Stake in Liverpool FC

A group including U.S. billionaire Jeff Bezos has acquired a minority stake in Liverpool Football Club. The agreement, established with the current owners, Fenway Sports Group (FSG), includes a provision allowing the consortium to purchase a controlling interest in the club in the future.

FSG announced the deal, which involves selling approximately 30% to one-third of the club’s shares, marking Bezos’ initial entry into sports franchise ownership. Bezos’ investment is funneled through the K5 Sports fund, led by Amit Bhatia, forming part of the 1892 Holdings consortium. According to confidential sources, the consortium is given the option to take a majority stake within the next 12 months, although this is not a binding commitment and may not result in further investment.

Bhatia, previously a co-owner of Queens Park Rangers, is joined in 1892 Holdings by Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin’s family office and the Mittal Family Trusts. Bhatia will become the vice chairman of Liverpool FC, accompanied on the board by Elaine Saverin and Bryan Baum from K5 Sports. Bezos will not have a seat on the board.

Despite the sale, FSG will maintain majority ownership and retain control over the club’s operations. There will be no alterations to the leadership or management of Liverpool, as confirmed by sources.

FSG’s public announcement emphasizes the role of the strategic investment in supporting the club’s long-term growth through collaboration with experts in global business, technology, and investment. It states, “The consortium partners will work with FSG and the club’s leadership team to evaluate opportunities that enhance the club’s objectives on and off the pitch.”

Bhatia expressed pride in investing in Liverpool FC and collaborating with FSG, acknowledging the achievements at Anfield. He stated, “To be welcomed as a partner in a club of this stature is a huge privilege. We are making this investment because we believe deeply in Liverpool and its leadership, and we look forward to supporting the club’s continued success for years to come.”
