Several Democrats have expressed disapproval of a controversial Memorial Day post by the Democratic National Committee (DNC), which has now been deleted. The post attracted criticism across the political spectrum, prompting responses from prominent party members.
Democratic Voices Condemn the Post
Senator Tammy Duckworth from Illinois was among those who criticized the DNC’s post. Duckworth, an Army veteran and former helicopter pilot, experienced severe injuries during the Iraq war. She stated, “It is incredibly distasteful to use our heroic dead for a political attack on Memorial Day. I’m a Democrat and I condemn this post by the DNC.”
Representative Jason Crow from Colorado, also a former Army Ranger, joined Duckworth in condemning the post. He commented on social media, “If we want the moral high ground, we have to be better. I fought for our country and served with those who made the ultimate sacrifice. It’s wrong to politicize this day. I won’t hesitate to call out my own team when we fall short.”
Content and Criticism of the Original Post
The deleted post originally referred to “Trump’s war with Iran” and included images of the fallen soldiers. This reference sparked criticism from various quarters, with RNC Chair Joe Gruters and others responding unfavorably.
The Department of War and Senator Rick Scott from Florida were among those who called out the DNC. Scott urged the deletion of the post, describing the use of fallen soldiers as “political props” and labeling the act as “disgusting and unAmerican.”
DNC’s Response and Ongoing Discussions
The DNC replaced the deleted post with a statement that read, “This Memorial Day, we remember and honor those who have made the ultimate sacrifice to protect our country and defend our freedoms.” However, they did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Meanwhile, the Democratic National Committee faced further scrutiny related to their 2024 election autopsy. Opinion columnist Michelle Goldberg criticized the report as “mysterious,” “anticlimactic,” and lacking substance after much anticipation within the party.
