Manny Fernandez, renowned for being one of the NFL’s leading pass rushers, passed away on May 24 at the age of 79. Fernandez dedicated his entire eight-year NFL career, from 1968 to 1975, to playing with the Miami Dolphins. He significantly contributed to the team’s success under coach Don Shula, helping to secure Super Bowl VII and VIII victories. His efforts were crucial in achieving the Dolphins’ historic 17-0 perfect season.
In a statement, the Dolphins expressed their sorrow, stating, “We are deeply saddened by the passing of Manny Fernandez, a member of the 1972 Perfect Team, a two-time Super Bowl champion, Ring of Honor member, and an anchor of the Dolphins’ legendary No-Name Defense. His consistent and selfless contributions on the field were instrumental to the Dolphins’ success throughout the early 1970s, particularly in the team’s three consecutive Super Bowl appearances, in which he produced some of the most memorable defensive performances in the history of the game. Our thoughts are with his family, loved ones, and teammates as we remember one of the best players in Dolphins history.”
“When I was at San Lorenzo High School, I didn’t really have a lot of self-confidence,” Fernandez shared in a 2006 interview. “I dreamed of being a Raider, but figured I’d be a Longshoreman. I never really looked beyond tomorrow.”
Born in San Lorenzo, California, Fernandez joined the Dolphins as an undrafted free agent from the University of Utah before the 1968 season. By his third season, he was recognized as an All-Pro and appeared on an MVP ballot in 1970. Playing primarily as a defensive tackle, Fernandez achieved 35 sacks and recovered six fumbles in 103 regular season games. During 10 postseason appearances, he added 4.5 sacks. Notably, in Super Bowl XII, where the Dolphins defeated the Washington Redskins 14-7 to complete their perfect season, Fernandez achieved 17 tackles.
After retiring from professional football, Fernandez settled in Georgia and pursued a career in the insurance industry. In December 2014, he was honored by being inducted into the Dolphins’ Ring of Honor.
