North Korea Launches Short-Range Missiles Toward Western Seas

On Tuesday, North Korea launched a series of projectiles, including short-range missiles, toward its western seas, according to South Korean military reports.

The Joint Chiefs of Staff in Seoul reported that the close-range ballistic missiles were launched at around 1 p.m. local time from Chongju, located in the western province of North Pyongan. These missiles traveled approximately 50 miles before landing in the Yellow Sea. The estimated range of these short-range missiles is around 185 miles. Alongside missile launches, North Korean forces were also observed firing artillery munitions.

In response, South Korea is collaborating with U.S. analysts to gather detailed information about the launches. A statement from the South Korean military emphasized increased surveillance and monitoring. They are coordinating closely with the United States and Japan to share relevant details and maintain a state of preparedness.

This missile launch marks North Korea’s first since April 19, when short-range ballistic missiles were test-fired in the Sea of Japan, also known as the East Sea by both Koreas. The Yellow Sea is referred to as the West Sea in both North and South Korea.

As the situation unfolds, Newsweek has contacted the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command for comments. Further updates will be provided as the story develops.
