Gary Sinise, a Golden Globe Award-winning actor known for his role as Lt. Dan in “Forrest Gump,” recently shared insights into his decision to leave California and pursue a different path. In an interview with Fox News Digital, Sinise discussed his departure from Hollywood and his move to Nashville, Tennessee.
Personal Challenges and Family Priorities
Sinise stepped back from acting in 2019 to address personal challenges and family priorities. During a difficult period, his son Mac was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer in 2018 and passed away in 2024. Additionally, Sinise experienced the loss of his father to a stroke in 2021, while he also supported his aging mother.
“Mac fought for several years, and I was by his side throughout,” Sinise said.
These experiences led Sinise to evaluate his life decisions and prioritize family over career opportunities. He emphasized the importance of family, stating that supporting loved ones through hardship is crucial.
Decision to Move to Nashville
Faced with rising living costs in California, Sinise and his family opted for a move to Nashville. He cited the affordability in Nashville, with gas prices significantly lower than those in California. Sinise expressed his desire to save money and provide for his children, rather than spending excessively on taxes and other expenses in California.
“I would rather save for my kids than spend it all on property taxes,” Sinise explained.
Returning to Acting
While Sinise does not regret stepping back from acting, he remains open to returning if an appropriate project arises. His decision to focus on family first has not diminished his passion for acting, but he understands the value of being there for family at critical times.

Sinise has dedicated much of his time and resources to helping veterans through the Gary Sinise Foundation, established in 2011. The foundation assists military personnel, veterans, first responders, and their families, providing continued support whenever needed.
“Once people join our program, they’re part of our family,” Sinise stated.
The foundation is more than just one-time assistance; it aims to offer lasting support.
Honoring His Son’s Legacy
In addition to his philanthropic work, Sinise is committed to preserving his son Mac’s legacy, particularly through music. Mac, an aspiring musician, left behind numerous musical ideas, which Gary has brought to life in posthumous albums. The third album, “Resurrection and Revival: Part 3,” has been released, with all proceeds supporting the foundation’s mission.
“It’s emotional because I miss him so much,” Sinise shared, reflecting on Mac’s music.
The proceeds, in line with Mac’s wishes, continue to aid military families and first responders, furthering his legacy.
