Lake Central senior first baseman Tyler Thuftedal is hitting his stride at an important moment. Despite a slow start, Thuftedal has found confidence in recent games. In his playoff debut, he went 2-for-2 with two doubles, an RBI, and a run scored. Thuftedal played a key role in the Indians’ 13-3 victory over Munster during a Class 4A Crown Point Sectional first-round game.

Surprisingly, Munster intentionally walked Thuftedal with one out and runners on second and third in the fifth inning. Thuftedal expressed his surprise at the strategy, especially considering his earlier struggles. “I didn’t get off to the start I wanted,” he said. “But these last few games, I’ve been feeling like myself.”

Thuftedal increased his batting average to .215 during the game. He had entered with only three doubles for the season. Reflecting on his progress, Lake Central coach Mike Swartzentruber noted the significant improvement in Thuftedal’s performance. “He’s an interesting guy because he’s a senior and he played all year but struggled until recently,” Swartzentruber said. The coach credited Thuftedal’s turnaround to a mental shift and praised his key hits that helped sustain the team’s momentum.

In addition to Thuftedal’s accomplishments, sophomore designated hitter Jacob Forystek contributed by going 3-for-4 with an RBI, three runs, and two stolen bases. Junior catcher Brayden Walls also excelled, hitting a three-run homer in the fifth inning. Walls commented on Thuftedal’s resurgence, saying, “His bat’s been coming alive. It’s great to see.”

Munster took an early 3-0 lead, but Lake Central responded with five runs in the third inning. Junior third baseman Connor Friesema’s two-run single and Thuftedal’s double played vital roles in the comeback. In the fifth inning, the Indians scored eight more runs, sending 12 batters to the plate.

Sophomore left-hander Owen Kopercinski showed resilience after a rocky start. He settled down to retire 10 consecutive batters and secured the victory with a strikeout in the fifth inning. Kopercinski had only allowed one run in their earlier meeting against Munster.

Coach Swartzentruber selected Kopercinski for his ability to handle pressure despite his youth. The coach had confidence in his mental fortitude. “The moment wouldn’t be too big,” he stated.

Lake Central’s victory extends their recent successful run, where they have won 14 out of their last 16 games. Thuftedal cherished the experience, stating, “This was electric. That was the most fun game of the season. It was great to be part of that.”
