New Wave of Directors Emerging from YouTube

The film industry is witnessing a significant shift as directors from YouTube are making a mark in theaters. This trend raises questions about the potential for YouTube fame to transition to box office success. Recent releases provide clear examples of this phenomenon.

The psychological horror film “Backrooms,” released by A24, exemplifies this shift. It opened recently in 3,400 theaters across the United States and Canada. Kane Parsons, a 20-year-old director whose YouTube videos have amassed 342 million views, directed the film. According to box office analysts, “Backrooms” could earn at least $60 million by Sunday. For context, Steven Spielberg’s upcoming sci-fi film “Disclosure Day” is expected to debut with $35 million. A24 produced “Backrooms” for about $10 million, featuring stars like Chiwetel Ejiofor and Renate Reinsve. In contrast, Universal Pictures’ “Disclosure Day” had a production budget of approximately $115 million, with Emily Blunt leading the cast.

“Backrooms” is part of a trend where emerging directors refine their skills on YouTube instead of the traditional Hollywood path. Curry Barker and Mark Fischbach are notable examples who have successfully turned their online audiences into substantial box office returns this year.

Stephen Galloway, dean of Chapman University’s film school, stated, “It’s the start of a gigantic shift. These are the cinematic insurgents of our era.”

Another example is “Obsession,” a film directed by 26-year-old Curry Barker. Known for his comedic and horror content on YouTube, Barker’s film has grossed $74 million in North America within two weeks. The movie, a blend of comedy, horror, and thriller, explores the dangers of romantic obsession. Despite its modest production budget of $750,000 and a cast without major stars, “Obsession” may reach $100 million by the end of its theatrical run.

This new wave of directors is redefining how filmmakers can achieve success, merging online platforms with traditional box office channels.
