Former NFL Pro Bowler Walt Rock Passes Away at 84

Walt Rock, a distinguished defensive tackle in the NFL, passed away on May 19 at the age of 84. Rock’s career spanned 11 seasons, during which he played for the San Francisco 49ers and the Washington Redskins.

Rock’s journey to the NFL began at the University of Maryland, where he earned honorable mention All-American honors in 1962. He excelled as both a guard and tackle, securing a place on the all-Atlantic Coast Conference team. In the 1963 NFL Draft, the 49ers selected him 21st overall in the second round. Despite also being drafted by the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC, Rock chose to join the NFL.

Over his career, Rock appeared in 137 games from 1963 to 1973. He was a starting tackle for virtually every game in the last ten years of his career. Rock’s talent earned him two Pro Bowl selections in 1965 and 1966 while playing with the 49ers. In 1966, Sporting News named him first team All-Pro.

In 1968, a significant trade sent Rock to the Washington Redskins in exchange for a first-round draft pick. He played his first playoff game in 1971. In 1972, Rock was instrumental in leading Washington’s “Over-the-Hill Gang” to victory against the Dallas Cowboys in the NFC Championship. This win advanced the team to the Super Bowl, where they faced a defeat against the Miami Dolphins. His performance made him the second University of Maryland player to participate in a Super Bowl.

Unfortunately, recurring ankle sprains cut short Rock’s playing days in 1973. After retiring, he took on a full-time role as the president and owner of Door Systems, Inc. in Virginia, a position he had held during NFL off-seasons.

Rock’s early life showcased his versatility as an athlete. In 1972, he was inducted into the Elyria (Ohio) Sports Hall of Fame. During his high school years at Elyria, he was not only a football standout but also excelled in basketball, becoming the team’s leading scorer and rebounder.

Rock is survived by his wife, Alice; three sisters; two children, Douglas and Chelsea; as well as numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
