Craig Counsell addressed questions about the lineup changes for the Chicago Cubs Friday night in St. Louis. Pete Crow-Armstrong took the leadoff position for the Cubs as they began a three-game series against the Cardinals. Journalists asked Counsell if Crow-Armstrong would remain in that spot for the foreseeable future.
“I think he’ll be there tonight,” Counsell stated, leaving the future uncertain. When pressed further, he replied, “We don’t have to make out a lineup for September 1st,” emphasizing flexibility based on performance.
Crow-Armstrong had a .190 batting average in his six games at the top of the lineup, but his .357 on-base percentage showed promise with five walks. Counsell made adjustments last week after a prolonged losing streak, sticking with his new lineup on Friday following victories over Pittsburgh.
“I think he’s done a nice job since he’s been there,” Counsell added.
