US Defense Secretary Reaffirms Commitment in Pacific Region

Washington’s Pacific Region Commitment

During a conference in Singapore, US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth emphasized America’s commitment to the Pacific region. Addressing dignitaries, diplomats, and security officials at the Shangri-La Dialogue, organized by the International Institute for Strategic Studies, Hegseth stated that the region has significant implications for US security and prosperity. Washington aims to establish a lasting and favorable balance of power in the Pacific.

US-China Relations

This year’s conference followed US President Donald Trump’s visit to Beijing where he met Chinese President Xi Jinping. Trump praised Xi as a great leader and foresees a fantastic future for their nations. Hegseth clarified that while maintaining a strategic stability relationship is agreed upon by both countries, the US prioritizes preventing China’s domination in the Indo-Pacific region.

“There is justified alarm regarding the historical rise of China’s military power and its expanding military activities in and around the region,” Hegseth stated.

After Hegseth’s remarks, Chinese Major General Meng Xiangqing appreciated the constructive dialogue between Xi and Trump, indicating a positive outlook for China-US relations in the following years.

Concerns and Criticism

US Senator Tammy Duckworth voiced concerns over Trump administration’s approach toward China, suggesting potential distraction from Indo-Pacific commitments due to conflicts elsewhere. After Trump’s talks with Xi, Duckworth noted ambiguity in Washington’s willingness to defend Taiwan, despite legal obligations to provide defense means.

Although Hegseth assured no change in US status regarding Taiwan, he avoided comments on a pending $14 billion arms deal with Taiwan.

Defense Spending and Partnerships

Hegseth urged allies to increase defense spending, highlighting the need for partners rather than protectorates. Applauding several Asian countries for their efforts, he criticized certain European countries for prioritizing idealistic values over national interests alignment.

“Our partners in Asia understand that enduring partnerships rely on concrete national interests alignment rather than idealistic values,” he declared.

Australian Defense Minister Richard Marles underscored the importance of renewing the international rules-based order rather than dismantling it.

AUKUS Initiative

At a separate event, Hegseth, Marles, and UK Defense Secretary John Healey announced an AUKUS partnership initiative focused on developing underwater drone capabilities. The initiative aims to create advanced sensors and weapon systems to detect threats affecting underwater infrastructure.
