A shooting at Virginia State University involving multiple suspects resulted in a campus lockdown early on Saturday. The incident occurred near the university’s Quad Annexes. Both the campus police and Chesterfield County police are leading the investigation.
Authorities reported that when officers arrived, they found five individuals with gunshot wounds outside the campus dormitories. All victims were taken to hospitals. One person, initially in life-threatening condition, has been upgraded to critical condition. The other victims have non-life-threatening injuries.
The university issued a statement confirming the involvement of multiple suspects. People were advised to avoid the area. The statement emphasized that the community should follow all law enforcement instructions. There was a significant police presence on campus Saturday morning.
“The VSU Police and the Chesterfield County Police Department are actively investigating,” the university noted. “People should avoid the area and comply with law enforcement instructions.”
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and the Hanover County Sheriff’s Office are also assisting in the investigation. Virginia State Police directed inquiries to local authorities leading the case. More information is promised to be released later.
Virginia State University, a historically Black institution, is located in Ettrick, Virginia, roughly 24 miles south of Richmond. The university has about 5,700 students and is known as the first state-supported four-year college for Black Americans. Most attendees are undergraduate students.
This shooting took place just before the start of the academic year. According to the university, residence halls opened a week prior, and classes are scheduled to commence on Monday. Many students recently finished the “New Trojans Experience” program for newcomers.
