Pro-Israel New Yorkers will gather on Sunday for the annual Israel Day Parade, a celebration of the Jewish state. For the first time in recent memory, the mayor of New York City will not attend.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced he would not participate, citing his opposition to the Israeli government. Parade organizers believe he might be the first mayor to skip, although attendance records since the parade’s inception in 1964 are incomplete.
Mamdani mentioned that Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch would represent his administration at the event, with security measures tighter than before. “I made it clear during my campaign that I wouldn’t be attending the parade, and my views on the Israeli government are no secret,” he stated at a Thursday news conference focused on parade security preparations. The parade will start at 11:30 a.m. in Manhattan.
The mayor emphasized his commitment to ensuring safety at every city event, regardless of his presence. Jessica Tisch, standing beside him, referred to the parade as “one of the most joyful days of the year.”
