Matt Brown, known for his role on the Discovery Channel’s “Alaskan Bush People,” has passed away at the age of 42. His brother, Bear Brown, shared the news on social media, confirming that authorities found Matt’s body in a river in Washington state.
In a TikTok video, Bear Brown explained, “They found a body in the river a few hours ago, and it was positively identified as being Matt.” He noted that their brother, Noah, confirmed the identification.
Bear expressed disbelief over Matt’s apparent decision to harm himself. “I would have never suspected he would have hurt himself, honestly,” Bear said, mentioning Matt’s long-standing struggles and fears that his brother might overdose.
The Okanogan County Sheriff’s Office responded to a 911 call after a witness reported seeing a man in a shallow section of the river. The witness later heard a sound and found the man face down in the water. A firearm was discovered nearby.
Bear Brown urged fans to respect the family’s privacy during this difficult time, especially their mother, Ami Brown. “Please be respectful to the family, to my mom [Ami Brown] especially,” he stated.
Matt Brown appeared on “Alaskan Bush People” from 2014 to 2019, leaving the show to address his addiction issues. In a 2016 interview with People, Matt discussed his drinking problems, saying, “I could see myself spiraling.” His parents’ support helped him face his challenges.
After completing a 35-day treatment program, Matt told the outlet, “I learned a lot about myself in those 35 days. I’ve turned my weakness into a strength.”
Tragedy is not new to the Brown family. Billy Brown, the patriarch of “Alaskan Bush People,” died in 2021 at 68 after a seizure. “We are heartbroken to announce that our beloved patriarch Billy Brown passed away,” the family shared.
Billy Brown lived off the grid and inspired his family to do the same. His son Bear wrote, “We plan to honor his legacy going forward, and to continue with his dream.”
