Ronald LaPread, co-founder and former bassist of the Commodores, has died at the age of 75. The news was confirmed by his daughter, Soraya LaPread, on social media.

“It is with a very heavy heart that I must announce that my Father, Ronald LaPread, has passed,” Soraya wrote in an Instagram post, accompanied by a photo of them together.

No cause of death was revealed, though it was reported by the NZHerald that LaPread passed due to a “sudden medical event” in Auckland, New Zealand. LaPread resided there for four decades.

LaPread co-founded the Commodores alongside Lionel Richie, Walter “Clyde” Orange, Thomas McClary, William King, and Milan Williams while they were students at the Tuskegee Institute in Alabama, now known as Tuskegee University. Their big break came in 1971 when they opened for the Jackson 5, leading to national recognition. The band signed with Motown and released their first studio album, “Machine Gun,” in 1974.

LaPread was with the Commodores from 1970 until 1986, playing on 11 albums, including hits like “Machine Gun,” “Brick House,” “Easy,” and “Nightshift.” During this time, the band received nine Grammy nominations, winning in 1986 for Best R&B Vocal Performance – Duo, Group, or Chorus for “Nightshift.”

After leaving the band, LaPread moved to New Zealand but stayed connected to the Commodores’ legacy, occasionally rejoining them for special performances. In a 2022 interview on the “TRUTH IN RHYTHM” YouTube series, he mentioned he continued to create music every day in his home studio.

“I play some bass, some keyboard, and do some singing,” he said. “It’s my joy, and I believe it’s a gift I’ll use until I can’t anymore.”

In October 2025, LaPread performed with the current Commodores lineup, including original member William King, during a show in Auckland. This appearance was commemorated by the band on Instagram, celebrating the love and excitement of the event.

Tuskegee Mayor Chris Lee also paid tribute to LaPread, recognizing his contributions to music and the pride he brought to their community. “Ron received his musical start while attending Tuskegee Institute High School and later Tuskegee University. His talent inspired many,” Lee shared on Facebook.

Despite his passing, LaPread’s music continues to inspire generations of music fans. His legacy remains strong in the history of funk, soul, and R&B music.
