Epstein’s Sperm Storage Raises Questions

Emails and records released by the Justice Department reveal that Jeffrey Epstein had been storing his sperm for years before his death in 2019. Epstein made arrangements for his sperm to remain in the control of his estate if he died, ensuring it would not be discarded.

Epstein deposited his sperm with California Cryobank before October 2012 and renewed his contract in 2016. This contract, dated May 9, 2016, outlined the terms for his sperm storage. Notably, the sperm was to remain under his ownership, rather than being donated. This information became public when Justice Department files were released earlier this year.

The current status of Epstein’s sperm is unclear. CooperCompanies, which owns California Cryobank since 2021, confirmed they do not store samples linked to Epstein but provided no further details. Additionally, representatives from Epstein’s estate have not responded to requests for comments.

The documents don’t specify when Epstein initially banked his sperm. He pleaded guilty in 2008 in Florida for soliciting prostitution from a minor and was pending trial for sex-trafficking charges at the time of his death by suicide in a Manhattan jail in 2019.

Kimberly Mutcherson, a Rutgers Law School professor who specializes in reproductive technology and bioethics, stated that the ethics of accepting sperm from a sex offender is a debated topic within the fertility industry.
