Since the resurgence of the Taliban in Afghanistan in 2021, the country has faced severe economic decline and social challenges. The regime has displaced prior improvements, affecting various aspects of life for Afghans.
Economic Challenges
The Afghan economy has struggled under Taliban rule, with significant downturns noted across multiple sectors. Malnutrition rates have sharply increased, presenting a dire situation for many residents.
A notable impact is the loss of over half a million jobs. This loss has exacerbated poverty and added to the economic instability of the nation.
Restrictions on Women and Girls
The Taliban’s policies have severely restricted women’s rights. Women and girls over 12 are largely prohibited from working and attending school. This has rolled back progress made in gender equality over the past two decades.
Taliban security forces maintain a strong presence in sensitive areas, such as the Torkham border crossing with Pakistan, symbolizing their control and enforcement of strict regulations.
