Myles Garrett Traded to Rams in Major NFL Deal

The Cleveland Browns are trading Myles Garrett to the Los Angeles Rams in a significant deal, sources informed the Associated Press on Monday. The sources, who requested anonymity as the trade has not been finalized, revealed that the Browns will receive Jared Verse, the 2024 AP NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year. Additionally, they will acquire a 2027 first-round pick and other draft picks that are still under discussion.

Garrett, a two-time AP NFL Defensive Player of the Year, has been noticeably absent from team workouts. He has, however, been seen visiting Cleveland during the Cavaliers’ NBA playoff run, where he holds a minority ownership stake. Browns Coach Todd Monken, hired in January, mentioned he had yet to meet Garrett in person. Defensive Coordinator Mike Rutenberg reported phone conversations with Garrett, discussing the team’s strategy. Garrett had favored Jim Schwartz for the head coach position prior to Monken’s appointment. Schwartz resigned after a three-year tenure.

Garrett was a unanimous selection for Defensive Player of the Year last season, with a record 23 sacks. Despite signing a four-year extension worth $204.8 million, making him the highest-paid non-quarterback, Garrett remained unsatisfied with the team’s course. Cleveland has struggled, posting an 8-26 record over the past two seasons.

Garrett’s option payments over 2026-28 were deferred earlier this year, a sign of ongoing negotiations. He expressed his commitment to winning, indicating dissatisfaction with any notion of tanking or rebuilding.

Since acquiring the Browns in 2012, owners Dee and Jimmy Haslam have appointed seven coaches, compiling a 73-139-1 record and only four winning seasons since 1999. This trade reflects another decisive move by Rams GM Les Snead, known for leveraging draft picks for top players. Snead previously acquired stars like Jalen Ramsey and Von Miller, contributing to the Rams’ success, including a Super Bowl victory.

Jared Verse, acquired last year as a first-round pick, became a key player following Aaron Donald’s retirement. He and other defensive stars are nearing the end of their rookie contracts. The Rams, favorites for the Super Bowl, now boast a reenergized defense alongside a powerful offense led by returning MVP Matthew Stafford. Their roster includes leaders in major NFL stats from the previous season.

Snead briefly pivoted from his usual draft philosophy after injuries disrupted a post-Super Bowl season. The team was rebuilt with strategic selections over two years, leading to a defensive line featuring Verse, Byron Young, and Kobie Turner. With this trade, the Rams enhance their defensive depth and strengthen their championship aspirations.
