Tommy John, Baseball Legend and Surgery Pioneer, Passes Away at 83

Thomas ‘Tommy’ John, a celebrated Major League Baseball player and pioneer for a revolutionary surgery, has passed away at the age of 83. His agent, Mike Maguire, confirmed the news to CBS News, revealing that John died at his home in Florida, peacefully surrounded by his wife, Cherly, and other family members.

John’s influence on baseball history is substantial, due largely to an experimental surgery he underwent in 1974. After suffering a potentially career-ending torn ulnar collateral ligament, he underwent an elbow reconstruction surgery performed by Dr. Frank Jobe. This procedure, now widely known as ‘Tommy John surgery,’ allowed John to continue his career, securing 164 additional wins to cap off at 288 wins in his 26-year career, in addition to achieving over 2,200 strikeouts and a 3.34 ERA.

Born in Terre Haute, Indiana, John started his professional journey by signing with the Cleveland Indians, now recognized as the Cleveland Guardians, at the age of 18. With a formidable curveball, he moved quickly through the minor leagues and made his debut in the majors in 1963. His career later spanned multiple teams, including the Chicago White Sox, Los Angeles Dodgers, California Angels (now the Los Angeles Angels), Oakland Athletics, and New York Yankees.

As a four-time MLB All-Star, John was recognized for his exceptional performance in the years 1968, 1978, 1979, and 1989. Just before his passing, John shared a heartfelt farewell letter through the Yankees during the 78th Old-Timers’ Day, acknowledging unspecified health issues. In his letter, he expressed gratitude towards his teams, fans, and especially Dr. Jobe, whose surgical innovation became a lifesaver for numerous pitchers worldwide.

Thanks to Dr. Jobe, who saved my arm & made it possible for me to continue pitching,” John wrote in his letter. “That surgery has since gone on to save the careers of countless pitchers, including many of the very best in the game today.”

John’s legacy will endure through the careers and lives he touched, as he is fondly remembered by fans and fellow athletes alike for his contributions on and off the field.
