President Donald Trump announced on Monday that he had discussions with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and representatives of Hezbollah’s leadership. Both parties agreed to cease their hostilities.
In a post on Truth Social, President Trump stated, “I had a conversation with Bibi Netanyahu today, asking him not to engage in a major raid of Beirut, Lebanon. He turned his troops around. Thank you, Bibi! I also spoke with representatives of Hezbollah’s leadership, and they agreed to stop shooting at Israel and its soldiers. Similarly, Israel agreed to cease their fire.”
Trump expressed hope that this ceasefire would be permanent, commenting, “Let’s see how long that lasts. Hopefully, it will be for eternity!”
The Lebanese Presidency’s X account confirmed on Monday that the proposed agreement included a ceasefire, with Israel agreeing not to fire on southern suburbs of Beirut and Hezbollah to refrain from targeting Israel. The post elaborated that the “ceasefire framework” would be “expanded to encompass all Lebanese territories.”
Meetings scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday aim to further “discuss this progress and build upon it,” according to the post. The two parties have been under a ceasefire since mid-April, as reported by the Associated Press. The proposed agreement comes amidst ongoing U.S. negotiations with Iran.
