A tragic incident occurred aboard a MARTA train in Atlanta, where a 66-year-old woman was fatally stabbed in a seemingly random attack. The victim, Margaret Swan, faced the attack while the train traveled between the Lakewood-Fort McPherson and Oakland City stations, as reported by MARTA Police Chief Scott Kreher.
MARTA expressed condolences, describing the event as a senseless act of violence. “Our thoughts are with the victim’s loved ones and those who witnessed this horrific incident,” they stated.
Authorities have charged 25-year-old John Elijah Matthews with murder malice in connection with Swan’s death. According to reports, Matthews allegedly approached Swan as she sat alone on the train near the Oakland City MARTA station. Surveillance footage, obtained by FOX 5 Atlanta, shows Matthews walking to her side and attacking her.
At 11:21 a.m. on Saturday, CCTV captured Swan seated by herself on the train. Minutes later, Matthews appears, approaching her. Within seconds, he allegedly took out a knife and began the attack, cutting her throat. Swan was reportedly stabbed between 18 and 20 times in a sudden, unprovoked manner.
The entire attack took place inside the moving train before MARTA officers arrested Matthews on the station platform. The warrant details that Swan screamed for help during the assault. Matthews allegedly threw her to the floor and stood by until the train reached Oakland City Station.
Upon arrival, Matthews exited the train, still armed, as officers rapidly intervened. Matthews was apprehended and charged promptly after the attack. Despite emergency medical efforts, Swan succumbed to her injuries at the scene. The incident was reported around 1:29 p.m. at the Georgia State MARTA station.
This development has heightened concerns among Atlanta’s transit passengers regarding train safety. A similar event occurred last week when a man was stabbed multiple times at the Georgia State Station.
