Debbie Wasserman Schultz Faces Criticism Over Re-Election Bid

Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, a Democrat from Florida, encounters increasing opposition from some Black leaders regarding her decision to seek re-election in a majority-minority district. This decision appears to impact her support from the highest-ranking Black Democrat in Congress, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries.

Jeffries did not endorse Wasserman Schultz’s re-election campaign, although she has entered the race for the plurality-Black district and faces four Black opponents in the August 18 primary. He stated at a news conference when asked about his support that he hasn’t made a decision concerning that particular race. He mentioned discussing the race with Wasserman Schultz but withheld explicit support.

Jeffries acknowledged that everyone has the right to run where they see fit and stressed the importance of candidates making their case to the people they aim to represent. He highlighted sensitivities due to an unprecedented assault on Black political representation, which stems from the Supreme Court’s decision to limit the use of race in electoral district drawing in Louisiana v. Callais. This ruling led to redistricting in Republican-led states, affecting districts represented by Black Democrats.

Local Black leaders have strongly criticized Wasserman Schultz’s choice to run in a district historically represented by a Black lawmaker for over three decades. Elijah Manley, running in the Democratic primary, criticized her for claiming support from the Congressional Black Caucus, which the Chair denied, and falsely stating Jeffries’ support.

Despite these challenges, Wasserman Schultz holds a substantial fundraising advantage over her opponents, with over $2.5 million in campaign funds. Former Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick, formerly occupying the seat, is running again despite facing a pending criminal trial. Other contenders include former Broward County Mayor Dale Holness and musician Luther Campbell.

The district’s configuration comes from recent GOP redistricting efforts favoring Republican interests. Wasserman Schultz has a history of serving as the Democratic National Committee chairwoman amid controversies involving internal emails during Bernie Sanders’ 2016 presidential campaign. Her political career in Congress began in 2004.
