Matt Brown, known for his appearance on the TV show “Alaskan Bush People,” tragically died at the age of 42. The Okanogan County coroner confirmed that the cause of death was suicide, with “subsequent immersion in water” and “under the influence of methamphetamine” as contributing factors, according to reports by People.
His brother, Bear Brown, shared on social media that Matt was found deceased after authorities located a body in a Washington state river. Bear mentioned in a TikTok video, “They found a body in the river a few hours ago, and it was positively identified as being Matt.” He further shared that their brother, Noah, was responsible for the positive identification.
Bear expressed disbelief over the circumstances, stating, “I would have never suspected he would have hurt himself, honestly. He struggled for a long time, as I’ve mentioned, and I worried he was going to end up, like, OD’d or something like that. I didn’t think he would hurt himself.” Matt starred on “Alaskan Bush People” from 2014 to 2019.
The tragic incident drew attention when Okanogan County Sheriff’s Office deputies were alerted by a 911 call about a man sitting in a shallow river section. A witness eventually reported hearing a sound and discovered the man face down in the water. A firearm was reportedly found near where this man was last observed, according to Page Six.
The Brown family released a heartfelt statement sharing their loss. They wrote, “It is with broken hearts that we share the loss of our beloved son, brother, uncle, and friend, Matthew Brown. To millions of viewers, Matt was known as one of the original stars of Alaskan Bush People. To us, he was so much more.”
The family highlighted Matt’s qualities, describing him as intelligent, curious, and creative. He possessed an inquisitive nature and a love for adventure, nature, and learning. Known for his compassion, Matt openly shared his battles with addiction and mental health issues during periods of sobriety and recovery.
“Matt spent many years battling serious mental health challenges and addiction. Like countless families facing similar circumstances, we experienced periods of hope, recovery, setbacks, heartbreak, and reconciliation. Our Dad, Billy Brown, never stopped believing in Matt’s ability to heal and find peace, and neither did we,” the statement concluded.
