Researchers at Columbia University have achieved a significant milestone in genetic editing by altering the DNA of early human embryos with exceptional precision. This breakthrough has the potential to pave the way for engineering babies with specific traits, a subject of considerable ethical debate.
The possibility of editing embryos has been controversial for many years. On one side, the technology could allow parents to fix genetic mutations responsible for diseases safely. However, it might also lead to selecting preferred characteristics, a practice criticized by some ethicists as akin to eugenics.
Dieter Egli, a geneticist at Columbia University spearheading the research, emphasized the need for public discourse on the advantages and disadvantages of modifying embryonic DNA. He stated, “As a scientist, you can provide the data for discussion, but then essentially there you stop and let others take over.”
The research involved a modern technique called base editing. This method allowed Dr. Egli and his team to precisely substitute individual genetic letters in DNA sequences without the damage commonly linked to CRISPR, an earlier gene-editing technology.
Dr. Egli warned that the study leaves many questions unanswered regarding potential harmful side effects. “We’re not saying this is going to be used tomorrow in the clinics,” he noted.
The team has made their findings available online, and the research is undergoing review for publication in a scientific journal.
