Democrats are assessing their continued support for Maine U.S. Senate candidate Graham Platner amid a series of controversies. These include allegations regarding a Nazi tattoo, offensive online comments, and inappropriate behavior.
Controversial Past
Graham Platner has faced criticism for a tattoo with Nazi origins. Initially, he explained he chose it for its appearance, but former partner Lyndsey Fifield, a conservative from Virginia, claims it was deliberately selected due to its association with the Nazi S.S. unit. This account challenges Platner’s narrative.
Further scrutiny arose from Platner’s past online activity. In forums from 2013, he suggested rape victims need to take responsibility. In 2020, he made derogatory remarks about rural Americans, labeling them as “stupid” and “racist.” His statements about a U.S. Army Pfc., Ted Daniels, further added to the controversy, as Platner appeared to imply Daniels didn’t deserve to live after being wounded in Afghanistan.
Personal Life Allegations
Platner’s personal life has also drawn attention. An article reported accusations of him sending explicit messages to women using an app called Kik. Another account from Lyndsey Fifield described rough treatment during their relationship, including incidents that could be perceived as abusive.
“He regularly grabbed her by the shoulders — sometimes hard enough to leave marks — and, on one occasion, yanked her out of a cab by her wrist.”
Platner attributed these behaviors to a “dark period” in his life, citing frequent self-medication with alcohol. He denied any intent to harm and described his efforts to overcome these issues.
Reactions and Political Implications
Some Democratic supporters, including Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren, sought assurance from Platner about the absence of further troubling revelations. Despite these assurances, concerns persist, as the New York Times has published details that paint a complex picture of Platner’s character.
The primary election season is still in its early stages, yet the escalating allegations against Platner are raising questions about Democratic support. The party must weigh these factors against their goal of challenging the incumbent, Senator Susan Collins, a moderate Republican.
The unfolding situation prompts reflection on what Democrats are willing to tolerate to secure a strategic victory in Maine.
