California Elections: Key Races Show Tight Competition

Former reality star Spencer Pratt is seeing tighter competition from Councilwoman Nithya Raman in the Los Angeles mayoral race. Meanwhile, Republican Steve Hilton maintains a lead in the gubernatorial race over Democratic candidates Xavier Becerra and Tom Steyer.

Recent wildfires in Los Angeles have heightened national attention on these elections, becoming crucial tests for progressive leadership. Pratt, a registered Republican, aims to close the gap with incumbent Mayor Karen Bass, who has secured a spot in the November general election.

Los Angeles County’s latest vote count reveals Pratt with 163,549 votes, leading Raman, who has 130,473 votes. Despite Pratt’s lead, Raman gained over 10,000 votes in the latest update compared to under 6,000 for Pratt. Previously, Pratt had 157,116 votes to Raman’s 119,809.

In the governor’s race, Republican Steve Hilton holds a slight lead over Xavier Becerra. Hilton has received 1,533,435 votes, while Becerra follows with 1,470,100. Democrat Tom Steyer trails with 1,139,517 votes.

If no gubernatorial candidate receives more than 50% of the vote, the top two will advance to a November runoff. This mirrors the mayoral race, where the same rules apply.

California closed its polls on June 2, but results could take weeks. State election results in 2024 were not certified until 38 days later. A bipartisan bill passed in 2025 mandates that ‘non-problematic’ votes be counted within 13 days.

California leads the nation in mail-in voting, with 81% of voters using this method in 2024, compared to a 43% national average, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
